Frequently Asked Questions about our coffee purchasing Wh y isn’t all your coffee Fairtrade certified? The Fairtrade system certifies only cooperatives of small-holder, family-owned farms, a system that currently produces about 2% of the world’s coffee supply. The majority of the high-quality coffee Starbucks purchases is grown by farmers outside the system. Regardless of systems and certifications we apply the same principles to ensure that farmers receive an equitable price for their coffee and can strengthen their farms for the future What is your Fairtrade certified coffee? Café Estima Blend™ Fairtrade. Its low acidity and full body result in a velvety-smooth, balanced texture with a roasty sweet flavour. Why can’t I get Fairtrade certified coffee in my espresso drink? Starbucks® Espresso Roast is the signature flavour for our espresso beverages. We have specific recipe requirements for its blend and taste profile. We occasionally use Fairtrade certified coffee in our Espresso Roast, but we can’t guarantee that it’s 100% Fairtrade certified. Can I have a cup of Fairtrade certified coffee? Yes. Café Estima Blend™ Fairtrade filter coffee is regularly brewed as Coffee of the Week in stores throughout New Zealand. Even if it's not the Coffee of the Week, our baristas will brew a cup on Cafe Estima Blend on request. What is the difference between C.A.F.E. Practices and Fairtrade certified coffee? Coffee farms of all sizes are eligible to apply for C.A.F.E. Practices. Only cooperatives made up of small-holder farmers are eligible for Fairtrade certification. C.A.F.E. Practices is not a certification program but uses independent third party organisations such as Rainforest Alliance to verify farmers’ practices.
